Guided by memories of his late mentor Robert Kime, Orlando Atty set out on a reflective journey to Romania to uncover the rich heritage behind the region’s historic rugs.

In November 2024, Orlando Atty traveled to Romania on a quiet, personal pilgrimage to see the famed Transylvanian rugs of Brașov’s Black Church, a journey once dreamed about with his late mentor and friend, Robert Kime. These 16th-and 17th-century Anatolian rugs, traded along Ottoman routes and now hanging in Protestant churches across Transylvania, were once prized status symbols, gifted by Saxon merchants as acts of both devotion and display. For Orlando, who had spent years sourcing and studying rugs, the trip was about more than history or craftsmanship. It was about honoring a shared passion, tracing the origins of a tradition and standing in the light of something that still endures.
